About

#TeachersCan is a statewide movement committed to elevating the teaching profession and honoring the critical role teachers play in the success of Texas.

In 2019, a group of business representatives and organizational leaders gathered to discuss the coordination of a yearlong celebration of teachers designed to help educators feel more appreciated and remind Texans of the importance of the teaching profession. It quickly became apparent a one-year effort was not sufficient to achieve these goals. That exploration turned into a multi-year initiative — or movement — known as #TeachersCan.

#TeachersCan was scheduled to launch just as the COVID-19 pandemic was sweeping the globe. Initial plans to launch with in-person events and promotions at SXSWEdu in March 2020 quickly had to be revisited and reimagined. Two months later, #TeachersCan launched with 41 virtual events during Teacher Appreciation Week, including:

  • daily concerts and music tributes by Parker McCollum, Wade Bowen, Sunny Sweeney, Randy Rogers, Ray Benson, Radney Foster, and The Mrs.
  • cooking demonstrations by renowned Texas chefs and restaurants
  • video messages from popular celebrities, sports figures, and other famous Texans
  • yoga, exercise, and mindfulness sessions
  • participation in a livestream of the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards

In 2021, #TeachersCan and its partners brought World Teachers’ Day to Texas, celebrating October 5, and that entire week, with more than 100 proclamations from mayors and city councils, dozens of buildings lit up in blue (the academic color of education), light blue ribbon adorning columns, trees, and walls, and a DonorsChoose match campaign, through which #TeachersCan partners and Texans have collectively raised more than $3.1 million for teachers, classrooms, and students since 2021.

Today, the #TeachersCan coalition of more than 150 businesses, community and civic organizations, and universities remain united around opportunities throughout the year to lift up teachers and elevate the teaching profession. Teacher Appreciation Week and World Teachers’ Day continue to represent primary promotional platforms, while social media campaigns, billboards, and transit ads keep the brand and messaging front and center across Texas.
